Today in April 2011, Nyan Cat was uploaded to YouTube making April 5, Nyan Cat’s YouTube Cake Day!

If you don’t know who Nyan Cat is then you’re missing out on one of the most cloying memes of Internet history. Guaranteed, when confronted with the image (click the video above) you’ll tackle with emotions ranging from confusion to joy which has resulted in some Netizens displaying strange acts of devotion to the cat. Please refer to the adjacent image of a tattoo… yeah… Groupon has laser treatments to get rid of that when you exit puberty. #Jussayin

With over 69,816,662 views on YouTube, 560,575 comments and favourited 308,556 times it’s pure madness! It’s a 3:37 loop of an animated kitten with a poptart body, tooting rainbows and flying through space!? <confusion>WHY AND HOW DID THIS HAPPEN!!???!? </confusion>

Truth is, that video originally uploaded by YouTuber saraj00n on April 5, 2011 - the video we immediately recognize as “Nyan Cat” is really a mash up of two different things:

1) LOLCOMICS’ artist Chris Torres’ (aka- prguitarman) illustration of a “pop tart cat” which was drawn in response to two separate requests during a Livestreaming charity event for Red Cross. He was asked for a pop tart and a cat. He combined the two and posted the original Poptart Cat animation on LOLCOMICS on April 2nd, 2011.

2) Japanese musician, daniwellP’s, “Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!”, a Vocaloid track featuring the character/voice Hatsune Miku singing “Nya” repetitively from start to finish. Vocaloid being the social music composition software that allows you to make pop songs and vote on the best ones and “Nya” being the Japanese equivalent of Meow. (Check out the video of the original track below)

Since then Nyan Cat’s been featured on iPhone cases, a YouTube progress bar, a jailbroken hack for iPhones that replaced the slider in iOS with a NyanCat, characters in video games and even was used during the PBS hack by Lulzsec on May 29, 2011. #CATIVISM

The mash up was made and history was born on today… the official birthday of Nyan Cat as we know it!
